Savage Arms 110 BA: Rebirth of the .338 Lapua MAG – Part 1 of 3
The popularity of the .338 Lapua MAG cartridge has grown significantly in recent years. People reach for it to do everything from hunting elk to shooting F-Class leagues. Although the cartridge is close to 30 years old, it has not received much support from American hunters and target shooters. That is… until Savage Arms started producing rifles like the 110 BA!
There are close to a dozen different 0.338″ diameter calibers for sportsmen/sportswomen to choose from, but few come close to the ballistics of the .338 Lapua Magnum. It was originally developed by Cartridge Factory LAPUA, Ltd. to be a long range sniper caliber. Law enforcement and military groups immediately took to the .338 Lapua MAG because of its energy over great distances, its flat trajectory, and superb accuracy.
What Savage Arms accomplished with the 110 BA, that previous companies failed to do, is add curb appeal to this thunderous cartridge. An all aluminum Accu-Stock outfitted with a Magpul PRS-G3 buttstock allows for adjustment of Length-of-Pull, Drop at Heel, and Drop at Comb while adding some modern flair. With small touches like this Savage Arms effectively welcomed the cartridge into the 21st century. The other features built into this rifle ensure maximum accuracy:
- High Efficiency Muzzle Brake
- Fluted, Heavy Target Barrel
- Savage‘s famous Accu-Trigger
- Accuracy International 5-Round Detachable Magazine
- Over-Sized Bolt Handle & Pistol Grip
The materials poured into this model are also high quality. The receiver is 4140 Chrome-Moly Steel and the configurable rail is 6061 T6 Aluminum. The heavy, target barrel is a 1 in 9″ Right-Hand Twist Rate with 6-Groove Rifling. The barrel end is also Button-Rifled to protect all of this engineering.
The one downside to this rifle is also one of its greatest benefits. It weighs in at 15 pounds 12 ounces which may be too much to carry through the woods, but it significantly reduces the recoil in comparison to competing “sporter” models. The high efficiency muzzle brake also helps in taming recoil. So although this caliber delivers power like a Mac truck it will have a manageable kick.
With consistent muzzle velocities over 2,800 Feet/Second and energy exceeding 4,600 Ft-Lbs, the .338 Lapua Magnum in a Savage Arms 110 BA is nearly unmatched!

The Lapua continues to get the publicity, while the ballistics of the 338 RUM are nearly identical. The 338 RUM is also MUCH cheaper to shoot, and can be had in the ever-popular Remington 700 action.
My 110 fcp hs shoots Norma 300 gr hpbt in the same hole. $69 per 20. Not sure if I can load them for less
